Finishing the Front Door

The glass for the front door had a broken seal, so finally a replacement arrived and was installed.    It also now has hardware and works beautifully.   The door is huge -- 8x4' -- plus Brad built it out of exceedingly thick recycled wood with steel glass stops.  It is, perhaps, the heaviest front door I've ever opened or closed.   The "thud" of closing is a reassuring sound.

Flying I-Beam

The porch supports have been secured with concrete, the laminate covering ordered and much of the framework welding is completed for the overhead structure.  The door is completed and hung, with weather stripping, but doesn't have glass or hardware yet. The door bell needs to be wired.  So, very soon, we will have a functioning front entry!

Front Door

Here, Brad is constructing our front door, which is now installed, with weather stripping and all. We're still waiting for the glass to arrive for this door, as well as our two bridge doors, plus we need the hardware for the front door. Otherwise, they are fully functional, including temporary but quite functional "plastic windows". The completion of the details for our living pleasure and comfort are getting checked off the list at a nice pace.

Entry Porch

The past few days Brad and Josh have been hard at work building our front door, which is now glued and drying.  The threshold is installed, as is the door jam.  The front porch is also being constructed which started with metal posts being welded to a steel I-Beam.

Old but worth doing...

These pictures date back to the weekend before Thanksgiving.  They show our new Fleetwood doors from Island Sash and Door and the newly installed metal counter tops with brackets built by Heavy Metal Works.  Two great island businesses we've enjoyed creatively working with on various projects.

Going for the Perfect Fit...

Aren't they beautiful?  The tolerances are tight so, unfortunately, the compensating trim was too wide and didn't allow the opening windows to open.  Once the windows were in, they needed to come out again for some aluminum trimming.  It was a long, long, long day, but now we're back where we started yesterday.  Today the glass.

Main Living Windows to the East

The window installation began today and will, we think, be finished up tomorrow.  The frames are in which was a tricky task taking much patience, heavy duty drilling, then securing them with special screws.  Once the windows go in they will be glazed, a service provided by Island Sash and Door.

Windows Have Arrived

Our new main living windows have arrived.  Like the doors of last week, the windows are to be assembled  All of the pieces, including the glass, were packed and shipped separately.  Brad is wearing, like dreadlocks, the weather stripping. 

Door Installation

  

The day of installation, Dave, Aaron and Brad puzzle over the details.   But finally, the frame is complete, is lifted into place, but wait...it doesn't fit.  Out come the sander, planer and then the grinder to shave off some of the beam and then some off the  aluminum. It's nice to have lots of tricks in the bag for solving the problem.

As previously posted, the doors are in place and are amazingly beautiful.  There is a seamlessness between indoors and outdoors just like Brad always envisioned.

Main Living Doors

Our new Fleetwood sliding doors have arrived and are being assembled by Aaron (Island Sash & Door employee).  These doors will be the glass wall between our outdoor covered patio and the heated main living area.

Machine Room

The machine room in the main living building now has a door installed.

Steel Work

Tim has been working to build  steel window and door frames.
